After a visit from me at McTimoney Animal Therapy, I will often prescribe aftercare for you to do with your horse between visits. There are several horse massage tools you can use to help you perform this aftercare, although these are not necessary they can sometimes make things a bit easier.
Which Horse Massage Tools are Useful?
1) Massage Pads
As a McTimoney Equine Chiropractor and Equine massage therapist, I find clients that use massage pads, such as the Equilibrium. regularly on their horses have a reduction in tension, tightness and soreness along their horses back. It’s an excellent way to improve your horse’s muscle tone and increase functionality between visits.
2) Hand Held Massage Mitts
Hand held massage mitts such as one from Equissage are useful as you can pinpoint the exact area that needs attention.
3) Non Electric Mitts
These you use instead of just your hand. They frequently have soft rubbery spikes or balls and can be magnetic. They are cheap to buy and although not as effective as the electric massage mitts, they are easily transportable and save your hands from getting sore and dirty.
4) A Brush
Even giving your horse a vigorous brush after exercise can help encourage blood flow and relax muscles.
5) Your Hands
Your hands are one of the best tools for performing massage on your horse. They are sensitive so when using your hands really concentrate on feeling the texture and temperature of the muscles. Make a note of any inconsistencies and tightnesses and then you can compare these each time you massage your horse.
All these items should be used with caution. Please tell me if you are planning on using any tool other than your hands at our appointment and I will make sure you know how to use it safely and correctly so it can be of the most benefit to your horse. Special care must be taken around bony areas as these can bruise if massage is applied incorrectly.
