All horse chiropractors need veterinary permission to work on your horse. In fact, if your chosen chiropractor does not require veterinary permission this is a big red flag and that person should be avoided. Gaining veterinary permission is easy and just involves a phone call to your vet. There are several reasons why veterinary permission is required.

Why You Need Veterinary Permission

1) IT’S THE LAW!

All horse chiropractor are classed as secondary carers. This means that we always have to work under a vet. This doesn’t necessarily mean the vet needs to see your animal before I treat but that they need to be aware I’m coming out to you.

2) Contraindications

There may be a reason unbeknown to you, that horse chiropractic care would be detrimental to your horses health. This is the case in things like fractures, cancers or sometimes if a horse is on box rest. Although I take a thorough medical history before treating, it’s vital that your vet knows your horse is receiving treatment.

3) Working With Your Vet

If your horse is already under the care of the vet for a particular issue it’s likely that they will want to be kept updated on your horse’s progress and improvements. It’s important for horse chiropractor to work closely with vets to ensure that your horse is getting the best care. I will sometimes refer your animal back to the vet if I feel they need to be seen again.

4) For my Insurance and Professional Body Membership

My insurance demands that I have veterinary permission before I treat and I will get you to fill out a form to confirm that you have spoken to your vet.

So please, when I ask you to gain veterinary permission please give your vet a call and make sure you fill out my form to confirm they have said yes.
