Keep your dog happy, healthy and free from back pain by using a dog chiropractor…
The McTimoney animal chiropractic technique is a form of animal spinal manipulation that aims to reduce discomfort and health effects in a non-invasive and safe healing process. I focus on your dog’s skeletal structure to reverse the causes of certain problems.
I offer a specialised treatment that combines both McTimoney Chiropractic and Canine Sports Massage to give your dog the optimum benefit from their session. A regular chiropractic session for a dog includes:
- An initial consultation and assessment
- Approximately 20 minutes of McTimoney Chiropractic
- Approximately 20 minutes of canine massage and stretches
- Aftercare advice and followup recommendations
Areas covered in UK: Worcestershire and surrounding counties.
Signs Your Dog May Need a Dog Chiropractor and Massage Treatment
Signs of pain can be subtle in dogs, but these are the things to look out for:
- Reduced performance or mobility
- Lameness due to a previous accident or injury
- Changes in behaviour, such as excessive panting or licking
- Laboured movements
- Aggression or depression
- Postural changes
- Refusing food
- Reluctance to jump/play/run around
Choosing a McTimoney Dog Chiropractor
All animal chiropractors require veterinary permission to treat. This is in the form of a veterinary consent form that I will send you to forward to your vet.
I am insured and fully qualified with a Post Graduate Diploma in McTimoney Manipulation from the McTimoney College of Chiropractic.
All Dog Chiropractor Appointments Start with an Evaluation
As a certified McTimoney practitioner, having studied as a animal chiropractor at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic, I use methods that are safe and non-invasive. When you schedule an appointment, I start by carrying out an evaluation:
Review of Your Dog’s Health History
As a fully insured and qualified McTimoney practitioner I always work with veterinary permission and either you as the owner or your vet will have filled out my Veterinary Permission Form including any relevant medical history for your dog.
Here you can also explain to me the problems your dog has been having, their symptoms, and any other information you think I need to know.
Professional Evaluation Including Gait Analysis
I will assess your dog visually looking at their conformation, physical condition and how they move. If possible I will ask you to walk and trot your dog on a level surface so I can observe their gait.
Thorough Physical Examination
After the gait analysis I will feel along the spine, pelvis, joints, and musculoskeletal structure. I am looking for any abnormalities such as stiffness, spasms or misalignments in the spine and pelvis, muscle pain or tension, and any asymmetries.
Included in the Canine Chiropractic and Massage Treatment
20 Minute Chiropractic Treatment
The Chiropractic treatment is usually readily accepted by dogs but I’ll take my time and make sure your dog is comfortable throughout. I always make sure I have plenty of time with you and your dog so we are not rushed.
I will feel down your dog’s spine and pelvis looking for joint fixations. These asymmetries can be subtle or obvious with signs of inflammation, tension, heat and tenderness along the spinal column.
When a fixation occurs within a joint, the joint becomes locked at some point within its range of movement placing pressure on the spinal cord. This leads to dysfunction in the part of the body that the nerve affects. The purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to free the joint by releasing the muscle tension locking it in place. When the pressure is released from the spinal cord the body’s normal nerve function can be restored.
The whole of your dog’s body will be treated. I use short-lever, high-velocity, low-amplitude controlled thrusts to very specific anatomical points and articulations to create a therapeutic response in your dog and improve function of the joint, nerves and surrounding musculature.
20 Minute Massage Session
A regular session with me includes approximately 20 minutes of massage and stretching. I will check each muscle group and work on any areas of tension found.
Follow-Up and Aftercare Recommendations
Each case is unique, so I develop individualised programs of treatments that are most beneficial for your dog. Typically, there is a series of treatments based on your animal’s needs until the dog has fully recovered from its condition.
I always recommend a maintenance treatment program. Depending on your dog’s issues, age and pre-existing conditions this can be anything from every 1 to 6 months.
I will give you some aftercare to do with your dog. This may include management advice, exercises, specific massage and stretches. Please try your best to follow the aftercare I give you as it will ensure your dog gets the most out of their session and that they will improve more quickly.
Prevention is better than a cure and animals should continue to have treatments even if there are no outward signs of discomfort.
What to Expect After the Treatment
Your dog will need to rest for a few days after to let the body adjust and heal. Exercise will be restricted.
You should notice an improvement in your dog but occasionally this can take a few treatments to achieve.
After treatment your dog may feel sore and stiff but this is normal and it is their body adjusting to its new position. This shouldn’t last more than 24 hours.
Tiredness may also be observed and your animal may sleep more than normal for the next day or two.
It can also be an emotional event for the animal so it may not ‘be itself’ for a couple of days. Make sure your animal has plenty of water available as a treatment can cause dehydration.
